  2. Add carrier oil and essential oil, taking care to work liquid and dry ingredients together thoroughly. Feel free to select a combination of essential oils based on your personal preference. I love patchouli however it can be a bit overwhelming on its own so I opted to blend 40 drops each of Grapefruit, Black Pepper and Patchouli together to create a warm and spicy scent that is perfect for Valentine’s Day.

How to fix clumpy eyelashes

Although I am a professional makeup artist and love to apply and wear color cosmetics, I am not one to carry makeup in my purse with the exception of lip balm, gloss or color.  In fact, it’s rare that I touch up my makeup throughout the day unless I have an evening event or engagement after working a long day in the studio.  However, there is one quick makeup trick that I rely upon when I have evening plans and little time to refresh my appearance.

Kelly’s quick fix for clumpy eyelashes and freshening up your mascara

Items needed:

  • disposable mascara wand
  • small squirt bottle
  • mascara
  • qtips or cotton swabs for clean up
    clumpy-mascara-fix

How to use items above to fix clumpy lashes:

  1. Pour eye makeup remover into a small bottle with a fine mist sprayer.
  2. Spray eye makeup remover onto disposable mascara wand.  Nylon mascara wants work best for this part of the process.
  3. Comb through your lashes with treated mascara wand.  Start at the base of the lashes using a tiny bit of pressure use your wrist to make a zig-zag motion as you work from the base of the lashes through the tip.  Continue until desired look is achieved.
  4. Touch up lashes with mascara and use q tips for any necessary clean up.

Sending peace, love & happiness to all!

rosehip-seed-antiaging-miracle
Today’s blog post will introduce you to the source of my favorite natural anti-aging ingredient, Rosehip seed oil.  Rosehip seed oil is believed to be the best oil available for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation and has been used by Andean Indians of Chile for centuries due to its healing benefits to the skin.  I have been making my own face serum with certified organic rosehip oil for close to ten years and personally can attest to its effectiveness as an anti-aging product.  In fact, the majority of my makeup customers are also using and loving SpaDelic’s Organic Rosehip serum.  There are several brands of “rosehip serum” available for purchase in departments stores but I highly recommend that you read the ingredient label before you buy.  The majority of these “rosehip” based serums are highly diluted with less expensive carrier oils and slipping agents such as silicone derivatives.  High quality rosehip seed serum should have a deep amber color and zero scent.

Notice deep amber color

Rosehip seed oil is a luxurious, dry oil used for the treatment of wrinkles, scars and inflamed skin that leaves the skin feeling velvety soft and never greasy. This “miracle oil” is extracted from the seeds of the wild thorny rose bush which is native to Chile and can be either solvent extracted or “cold-pressed”.

I have been using rosehip seed oil as an anti-aging remedy for close to 10 years.

Cold-pressed oil has a high content of essential unsaturated fatty acids that our bodies can not reproduce such as oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids and is considered more delicate than other seed oils. Due to its fragile nature, rosehip seed oil should be kept in a cool, dark place and used within one year of purchase.

Pure rosehip seed oil should have a deep amber color. If lighter like product on the right, serum is highly diluted with less expensive, lower quality oils and ingredients.

Rosehip seed oil, mother nature’s form of Retin-A

Rosehip seed oil is an excellent source of natural vitamin E and natural vitamin A, also called, “trans-retinoic acid”. Retinoic acid, the acid derivative of vitamin A, is the active ingredient found in Retin-A or Tretinoin. (Chemically derived forms of retinoic acid)

Synthetic Tretinoin is a very strong chemical substance with possible negative side effects and should only be used under a board certified physician. Rosehip Seed Oil, however, produces all the benefits of Tretinoin, but without the undesirable effects since it is in a natural state as part of a complex system of unsaturated fatty acids. Therefore, its action is controlled and slowly released by nature, eliminating the rash of overdoses.

Retin-A has been referred to as a wrinkle cure because of its ability to increase skin cell turnover and speed up cell regeneration. Rosehip seed oil has been extensively studied for many of the same functions attributed to Retin-A, and has been shown as effective as the chemically formed, Retin-A but without Retin-A’s harsh side effects including over-drying and peeling of the skin. (Note: Unlike Retin-A, rosehip seed oil is not a treatment for acne).

Rosehip seed clinical studies

The first major validation of the healing and regenerative effects of Rosehip seed oil was in 1983, when the University of Santiago conducted studies on 180 people. These study participants all suffered with extensive facial scarring, acne scarring, deep wrinkles, UV damage, radiation damage, burn scars, surgical scars, premature aging, dermatitis, and/or other skin related problems. The results were extremely positive and demonstrated Rosehip seed oil’s ability to regenerate the skin, reduce scars and wrinkles, prevent the advancement of wrinkles and aging, and help skin to regain its natural color and tone.

Another highly regarded study was conducted in 1988 on twenty women between the ages of 25 and 35 that spend the 3 months of summer in resorts by the sea or visit the beach on a daily basis. Each of these twenty women had extensive premature aging to their skin including wrinkles and sun spots from overexposure to the sun.  After four months of applying rosehip seed oil daily, their wrinkles and sun spots had almost completely disappeared, and the skin had a fresher and healthier look.

The following paragraphs are extracts from a scientific research paper written by Dr. Bertha Pareja, Principal Professor, Faculty of Pharmacology and Biochemistry, University of San Marcos, Lima, Peru and Dr. Horst Kehl, from the School of Pharmacology of the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

Rosehip oil for dark spots/hyperpigmentation
Changes produced on skin by the action of the sun, i.e., photoaging (dermatoheliosis) are very common in all countries of warm climate. Exposure to sun causes important morfological changes in skin. Dermatoheliosis appears in different ways and varying intensity ranging from surface wrinkles, active keratosis and variation in the distribution of the melanin granules.

For this test volunteers were selected among people who usually spend the 3 months of summer in resorts by the sea or who go to the beach every day. The tests were carried out on 20 women aged between 25 and 35 who were controlled and assessed during the summer of 1988. The most frequently noted cutaneous signs were surface wrinkles, brown spots, eyelids and, in some cases, only an intense tan. All applied rose hip oil on the face during four months (May to August, Autumn 1988).

Observations were made every eight days. Significant changes were noted starting on the third week. Firstly, surface wrinkles started to disappear, spots started to fade until, at the end of the fourth month, the disappearance was almost complete. Skin presented a smooth and fresh aspect and the spots had almost disappeared.

Today, rosehip seed oil is exported around the world, and is used by the medical community, as well as in fine facial and cosmetic care products.

Rosehip is a recommended treatment for the following skin conditions:

  • Stretch marks
  • UV damage from overexposure to the sun
  • Scars from surgery, burns, and acne
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Wrinkles and premature skin aging
  • Hyper-pigmentation
  • Dermatitis
  • Burns, including those from radiation and sunburns
  • Age spots
  • Brittle nails
  • Dry and damaged hair

Sending peace, love & happiness to all!

Using too much foundation can make you look older by settling into fine lines or masking the skin’s natural luminosity. This is especially true for women with more mature or dry skin types. Most often, foundation is over-used in an attempt to hide dark spots, hyperpigmentation or other skin imperfections. Unfortunately, too much foundation actually accentuates skin imperfections and creates a fake, mask-like appearance.

powder-foundation-tips

How to choose a foundation formula that doesn’t settle into lines and make you look old

I am a firm believer that makeup is best used to accentuate the natural beauty that each women possesses.

Here are a few basic tips:

  • Avoid using powder based foundations unless you are under the age of 25 or have extremely oily skin. Most powder foundations make dry skin look drier and leave a flat, matte and/or chalky appearance on the skin.
  • Avoid matte formula foundations for same reasons as above.
  • Opt for light-weight formulas with a silicone base which smooth skin imperfections yet create a breathable barrier on the skin. These formulas typically provide medium coverage with a satin finish, making the skin look healthy and radiant.
  • Apply foundation first and concealer/corrector second to avoid using too much product. This is especially true when trying to conceal dark circles. The more product that is applied, the more visible fine lines and/or wrinkles become to the eye.

Kelly’s foundation recommendations:

mirabella-cc-cream-foundation

  • If you know me personally, your know that I have tried pretty much every foundation on the market, including high end lines with price points well over $100. To date I have yet to find a foundation or complexion product that I like better than those from Mirabella Beauty, a mineral makeup line out of California. My go-to product is Mirabella CC Cream which provides medium to full coverage but also helps to neutralize discoloration and dark under eye circles. On days I do not wear a full face of makeup or if I am running to the gym or yoga I prefer to use Skin Tint Crème to Powder foundation, also from Mirabella. The coverage is much like a tinted moisturizer so it helps to even out my skin tone and leaves a less dewy finish since it dries down close to the consistency of a powder. Due to the silicone base, Skin Tint Crème to Powder also minimizes the appearance of fine lines and skin imperfections. All foundations and complextion products in the Mirabella line range in the $40 to $50 price range.
  • I also highly recommend all of the foundations from Hourglass Cosmetics, a boutique brand that is also a mineral based line. My favorite from Hourglass is Veil Fluid Foundation, a serum-like formula that is chocked full of anti-aging ingredients. Price point $60
  • Trish McEvoy Beauty Balm Instant Solutions with SPF 35 is another great product that provides medium to full coverage and the high SPF makes it great for days when I am playing tennis and want an extra layer of protection against UVA/UVB rays. Price point $85.50

Happy-New-YearTomorrow is New Year’s Eve, a day that calls for makeup looks that are a bit more adventurous than other days of the year.   You don’t have to be a professional makeup artist to create a fashionable yet tasteful glamorous look for tonight’s New Year’s Eve festivities.   In today’s post I will share two simple tricks to create a New Year’s Eve makeup look that will look gorgeous on women of every age and ethnicity.

New Years Eve makeup

Glitter and rhinestone makeup

New Year’s Eve makeup in two simple steps:
gold-sparkle-makeup

  1. Utilizing glitter and/or rhinestones to create your New Year’s Eve party makeup is a fun way to step outside of your daily makeup routine. When I think about using glitter as part of a beauty look, I tend to think of it as a highlighting technique. In other words, it should be used to enhance a certain feature and not be the main attraction. For example the most tasteful way to use glitter as an accent on your eyes would be to apply it to one of the four main areas of the eye:
    •  inner corner
    • outer corner
    • center of the lid or
    • lashline

the basic-eye

In this photo I took my every day eye makeup and added a pop of gold to the inner corners to brighten the eye and make it a bit more festive for New Year’s Eve.

  • Metallic eye shadow was spotted all over the runways of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.  Designers including Reem Acra, Mara Hoffman and Marchesa showcased gilded lids in shades of metallic gold, silver, copper and bronze.  My favorite beauty trend this year encompasses two on-trend looks, the retro vibe of the 70’s as well as gilded lids in metallic gold.  You can learn how to create this look demonstrated in my blog post entitled Fall Makeup Trends
  • Red lip color is a classic makeup trend and perfect for all your holiday festivities.  If this is a trend look that you wear on a regular basis you can make it look a bit more festive for your New Year’s Eve celebrations by adding a touch of gold pigment to the center of the bottom lip as shown below. (You can see how I create a long lasting red lip in my blog post entitled, How to wear red lip color

I hope you have a tremendously happy and safe New Year’s Eve!

Fondly,
