  2. Add carrier oil and essential oil, taking care to work liquid and dry ingredients together thoroughly. Feel free to select a combination of essential oils based on your personal preference. I love patchouli however it can be a bit overwhelming on its own so I opted to blend 40 drops each of Grapefruit, Black Pepper and Patchouli together to create a warm and spicy scent that is perfect for Valentine’s Day.

  5. Mixture needs to be moist enough that it sticks together without crumbling when squeezed in the palm of your hand. If mixture is still crumbly continue to add small amounts of carrier oil, mixing until the ingredients are moist enough to stick together.

  6. Press into heart mold, packing ingredients as tight as you can to ensure bath bombs stick together.

RMS living luminizer dupe

Use this beauty tip to “lift” the high point of your cheekbone and outer corner of the eye for a more youthful and well-rested look: Using your ring fingers, gently tap luminizer in a “c” shape around the outer corner of your eye

I am a huge fan of using luminizing products to highlight facial features and RMS Living Luminizer is one of my favorites.  One of the reasons this product has such a devout following is that it is a natural based product that is free of harsh or controversial chemicals.  After reading the ingredient list I realized this would be a super easy DIY beauty project to share with you on the blog.

Kelly’s DIY Living Luminizer

Ingredient list:

  • 1 tbs coconut oil
  • 1 tsp castor oil
  • 1/3 tbs beeswax (pellets are best, they melt faster)
  • 2 Stella Eyeshadows from Mirabella Beauty
  • 1 vit e capsule
  • 3 drops rosemary extract

Directions:

  1. Melt beeswax (I like to use a hot plate to warm ingredients but if you don’t have one, you can use a double boiler, click here for instructions )
  2. Once beeswax has liquefied, add the coconut oil and castor oil and mix well to combine
  3. Once the wax/oil mixture is smooth, add your highlight ingredient of choice and mix well.  I used two pans of Stella Eyeshadow from Mirabella Beauty
  4. Puncture Vitamin E capsule and add contents to your mixture
  5. Add 3 drops of rosemary extract
  6. Mix until smooth then pour into jars and allow to cool. (Do not put lids on containers until completely cooled)

I love to pamper my skin with bath and body products, most of which I make at home. Not only is this a less expensive option, most of the time I actually like my DIY products better than chemical-laden versions found in retail stores. This is especially true for exfoliants such as body scrubs. There are several variations that you can make at home and today I am going to share one of my favorites, DIY coffee body scrub.

DIY-coffee-scrub

Coffee offers many benefits to the skin due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In skin care products, coffee acts like a diuretic that can reduce swelling and temporarily improve the visibility of cellulite. Coffee also stimulates blood flow which helps even out skin tone and promote a more radiant appearance. I always caution clients about using manual or physical exfoliants however, coffee can be finely ground so that it doesn’t scratch the skin so it is an excellent choice for a homemade body scrub.

I made the DIY body scrub shown below yesterday and I loved how soft my skin felt after using it. For best results, I suggest using a dry brush to exfoliate prior to showering or bathing.

DIY coffee body scrub

  • 1 c coffee grounds
  • 3 tbsp finely ground sea salt
  • 6 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • Vitamin E capsule
  • Essential oils of your choice

Directions:

  1. Combine dry ingredients in a clean mason jar or other container and mix well.
  2. Slowly pour in coconut oil while stirring to combine.
  3. Add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance. I used patchouli, frankincense and bergamot.
  4. Poke a hole in vitamin E capsule and add to scrub. Mix well then store in an amber jar for maximum lifespan.

In today’s blog post I will share my personal recipe for a natural cleansing oil

If you have met me or read many of my blog posts or beauty articles you know how passionate I am about taking care of the skin. In fact, I spend as much if not more time on my skin care routine each day than I do applying my makeup.

Being a skin girl at heart, one of my favorite pastimes is creating natural skin care products. For close to ten years I have been making and personally using organic facial serums, mud masks and floral hydrosols. In fact, my two most purchased products from my makeup studio are not makeup items but my rosehip facial serum and uplifting rose hydrosol.

Until this week, I have purchased whatever items I used to precleanse my face instead of trying to make my own. However, a few weeks ago a friend of mine asked me about making a precleansing oil so I decided to give it my best shot. After four days of use, I am extremely pleased with my DIY cleansing oil recipe so I thought I would share it with you in today’s blog post.

Before I share my recipe with you, let me offer you a word of caution on deviating from my recipe. Every DIY recipe I have found on the internet consists of basic ingredients from your kitchen such as coconut oil or olive oil. For an oil cleanser to thoroughly cleanse the skin and remove dirt and oil from the pores it MUST contain an emulsifying agent.

In the recipe below I use the emulsifier PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil which is miscible in water and oils.  What this means is it allows the two liquids to bind together or form a homogeneous misture. (This is similar to the way Micellar water works, it is made of “micelles” which are tiny oil molecules suspended in water)

As we all know, oil and water don’t mix thus, only surface dirt is removed when using household oils such as coconut or olive oil. Further, unless the DIY cleansing oil contains an emulsifier or surfactant, oil residue is left on the surface of the skin which can lead to clogged pores, milia or worse, deep cystic acne. (read more from Dr. Oz blog here)

Kelly’s Cleansing Oil DIY

  • 1.8 oz apricot kernel oil (50%)
  • 1.5 oz triglyceride (emollient) (43.5%)
  • .1 oz PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (emulsifier) (3.0%)
  • Licorice Extract (active ingredient) 45 drops (2.0)
  • Caprylyl Glycol EHG (humectant) 22 drops (1.0%)
  • Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) (antioxidant) 1 capsule
  • Essential oils of choice (optional) I used 10 drops of lavender, 6 drops of grapefruit and 2 drops of rosemary)

Add ingredients in order to a clean, disinfected beaker glass. Stir well until ingredients are well mixed. Package in a bottle with a pump device or a dispenser cap.

Kellys-DIY-body-oilI am obsessed with face and body oils.  I first began to use natural body oils and butters when I became pregnant with my first child in 1989.  As my pregnant belly began to swell, I noticed changes in my skin.  Fearful of getting stretchmarks, I adopted the daily routine of applying cocoa butter and sesame oil to my body throughout my entire pregnancy.

After my daughter, Madison’s birth, my post-pregnancy skin recovered without visible signs of trauma or stretchmarks.  On the assumption that extra nourishment to the skin via daily use of natural carrier oils was the reason, I never abandoned this beauty routine.  Two kids and 26 years later I am proud to report that I still do not have stretchmarks and my skin is surprisingly soft and radiant.

carrier-and-essential-oilsBody oils can be purchased at most mass market retailers and department stores.  My favorite oils to use are carrier oils.  Carrier oils are oils that are naturally derived from nuts and butters such as almond oil, avocado oil, sesame oil etc.  It is important to note that best results and maximum absorption to the skin can only be achieved by using oils that are free of petroleum or mineral oil.  The reason is that mineral oil and petroleum create a barrier on the surface of the skin.  This type of barrier can be useful in certain situations such as to protect the skin from extreme winter weather conditions while snowboarding or skiing.   However, on a day-to-day basis it is best to use natural carrier oils to ensure maximum nutrients are absorbed into the skin.

body oilsThere are many lovely body oils on the market with some of my favorites being Omorovicza’s Firming Body Oil and Blissful Frankincense Oil.  Unfortunately, both of these oils are rather expensive and a similar oil with higher grade carrier oils can be made at home for a fraction of the cost.  Below is a body oil that I made at home yesterday and I must say, it is one of my best to date!  Feel free to tweak the recipe to suit your individual style.

Instructions for Kelly’s DIY body oil:

Combine all carrier oils then add essential oils per the concentration chart below.  Note that coconut oil must be melted before you can combine with liquid carrier oils.  Store in a dark amber glass bottle or aluminum bottle with a lotion pump.  Store in a cool dry place to extend shelf life as there are no artificial preservatives in this recipe.  Coconut oil acts as a microbial however, adding a vitamin e capsule and grapeseed extract will also help preserve your DIY body recipes.
