Delight Word for 2020
Do you ask the Lord to give you a specific word to focus on for the new year? I started this practice four years ago, and so far, God’s fingerprints on His chosen word and its significance in my life is undeniable. Right now, I’m in the praying and waiting stage for God’s selection for 2021, and the hints He’s giving me have piqued my excitement to discover His plans for the coming new year!
While I’m waiting on the Lord’s confirmation, I’d love to share how, delight, God’s chosen word for 2020 has divinely played out over the last twelve months. Delight made sense to me from the get-go since spending time with Him and His Word was already my favorite thing to do. But with the unprecedented challenges of 2020 now exposed, I believe God was giving me a heart check and a warning to keep Him front and center in my life.
While we could never have imagined the drastic lifestyle changes, isolation, and fear that would soon grip our country and it’s people, God knew. As I wrestle to find justification for the incredible losses we continue to face, the Holy Spirit reminds me of who God is. He’s so much more than a creator or deity; He’s our Father, who, like us, loves His children but on a much grander scale than we could ever imagine. Therefore, He’d never send us on a harrowing journey without first supplying us with everything we need to make it through to the other side.
Before proceeding, I’ll admit the obvious; God didn’t hand out COVID vaccines or infuse divine immunity into our veins before the epidemic began. But He did and still does, offer us an opportunity to live and abide in Him through our relationship with His Son and the unstoppable power of His written and revealed Word.
My mind is overactive, which means I have to pay attention and be selective with the thoughts I allow to reside there. On my own, I’d be a lost cause, so once or twice a year, I buy a spiral-bound set of index cards to record Scriptures that address my personal, professional, or relational challenges prone to distract me from God’s path. Three different scriptures on my index cards for 2019 focused on the importance of seeking delight in the Lord and trusting Him to respond in favor:
- Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalms 37:4 ESV),
- The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him, (Psalm 37:23 NIV), and
- You lead me in the path of life; I experience absolute joy in your presence; you always give me sheer delight. (Psalm 16:11 NET)
In the OT, the Hebrew terms most commonly used for delight are hepes, which means to bend or incline towards an object or person, and rasa, which means to take pleasure in or delight. I need no further evidence to support God’s well-documented point; our proximity to the Lord is the determining factor in our measure of pleasure in life.
Don’t get me wrong; I yearn for group worship, spending time with friends, family, and attending outdoor concerts with my husband. However, what I most enjoy has not and could never be taken away, and that is the grace gift of intimacy with our heavenly Father. When we draw near Him by reading, receiving, and obeying his Word, we’re divinely aligned to experience His peace, His joy, and ultimate delight!
Friend, if you’re struggling with loss, loneliness, fear, anxiety, or any other ailment robbing you of the abundant joy the Lord desires for you, hear me when I say, that is not His will for you. While Jesus affirms, we will have trouble in this life; He will never guide us to a place where He will not provide for us. So seek His presence as you pray and ponder over His Word, and He will come through for you!
