A person who claims to be a Christian and yet exhibits hate towards ANY other person is a liar. Don’t take my word for it, Jesus Himself said it in 1 John 4:20-21:
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. (ESV)
For weeks, the Lord’s been speaking to me about the condition of the human heart. Specifically, the devastating consequences of hate, bitterness, and judgment. These all too common sins of the heart not only grieve God’s Spirit in us, but they also erect an impenetrable barrier between God and us. More plainly put, they disqualify us from receiving divine protection, blessings, and favor freely available to us as believers.
God’s highest charge is for us to love, and it’s non-negotiable! (Matt 22:37-40) Sadly, some of the most prejudiced and racist people I’ve met call themselves Christians. Even worse, they spit venomous racial slurs and commit heinous acts in the name of God. Not only do their words and actions defile and dishonor God, but they also reveal a bitter and unbelieving heart. No wonder so many deny the reality of our loving heavenly Father!
According to Jesus, people should recognize us as Christ-followers by the way we show love to one another. Love is the defining character mark of a Christian; therefore, hate, discrimination, and prejudice cannot exist in a heart that knows and loves God. (John 13:35)
Often referred to as the Golden Rule, the moral philosophy to do unto others as we would have done unto us, is not exclusive to Christian theology. Instead, it’s accepted as commonsense ethics across many cultural and religious boundaries. So, this raises the question: If loving our earthly brothers and sisters is a golden rule adopted by so many, then why is it practiced by so few?
Sendin peace, love, and prayers to all!
